How to Install a Phone Mute Wire in a Mini Cooper 9500CI
The Passport 9500CI radar detector, made by Escort Radar, is a multi-component car radar and laser defense system. The Passport 9500CI device includes radar and laser receivers, display modules, a speaker, radio mute cable and interface module. The interface module contains all of the wire ports to connect to your audio system. Connecting a phone mute wire to the audio system allows the phone to automatically mute the radio when a call comes in. The Passport 9500CI mutes the radio with a similar wire when it activates. In order to install the phone mute wire, you are required to run cable from the phone system to the rear of your radio receiver.
Instructions

1
Disconnect the negative terminal on the MINI Cooper battery. This prevents power from running through the system and risk of shock while you are working.
-
2
Remove the screws on the passenger side paneling using a Phillips head screwdriver, to expose the wiring to your audio system and Passport 9500CI installation. Wedge a flathead screwdriver beneath the base of the dash and carefully pry it free of the retaining clips beneath.
-
-
3
Lift the trim along the floor of the car and pull the edges of the carpeting up with your hands to expose the wiring between the Passport 9500CI and the car stereo. Use caution not to snag or rip installed wiring.
-
4
Determine the mounting location for the phone system unit according to the manufacturer's suggestions. Strip half an inch of plastic covering from both ends of the phone mute wire included with your phone system, using wire strippers. Insert one end of the cable into the mute port of the phone module.
-
5
Route the phone mute cable along the same paths as the wires already installed in your vehicle. Use the same path as the mute wire from the Passport 9500CI to maintain consistency with wiring. Avoid routing this cable along the path of the power (red) wires as this will cause interference.
-
6
Find the mute connection between the Passport 9500CI and the radio. On standard systems, this is the violet cable. Insert the phone mute cable into the "Mute" port on the radio receiver. This allows the phone and the Passport 9500CI to mute the radio when either device is activated.
-
7
Reconnect the negative terminal on the car battery. Turn on the radio system and then use another phone to call the number attached to the car phone system to test the functionality.
-
8
Reinsert the receiver into the dash and conceal the system wiring as before by reversing steps two and three.
