How to Troubleshoot the Brother MFC 685CW
The Brother MFC-685CW is a color inkjet printer that is capable of printing black and white documents at speeds of up to 30 pages per minute; as well as color documents at 25 pages per minute. In addition, the machine can also function as a scanner and fax. Over time, you may encounter problems using your Brother printer. Fortunately, there are a number of different troubleshooting techniques available to get your printer running properly.

"Near Empty [Color]" Error Message

Open the ink cartridge door on the front-right panel of your Brother MFC-685CW's ink cartridge tray if the error message "Near Empty [Color]" appears on the printer's LCD screen. This indicates that one of the machine's ink cartridge's is close to being out of ink.

Gently push on the release lever at the top of the tray and pull on the cartridge that is running low on ink and remove it from the printer.

Remove your new, replacement ink cartridge from its packaging and insert it into the printer. Close the ink cartridge door and print a test sheet of paper to ensure that the device is functioning properly.
Remove Paper Jam

Press the "Power" button on the front of the Brother MFC-685CW to shut the printer off. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the machine. Grasp the rectangular paper jam clear cover, which is located on the back of the printer and remove it to gain access to the inside of the machine.

Look carefully inside the printer for anything that may obstruct your pages from printing properly. Pull out any debris, such as torn or crumpled up paper and dispose of it. Be sure that there are no additional paper particles stuck in the printer rollers.

Replace the paper jam clear cover on to the rear of the printer and push until the cover snaps back into place. Re-insert the power cord into the back of the machine and power the Brother MFC-685CW printer back on.
"Media Full" Error Message

Remove the SD memory card from the slot labeled "Memory Card" on the front panel of your Brother MFC-68CW printer if the message "Memory Full" appears on the printer's LCD screen. This message indicates that the card you inserted into the machine is either full or contains more than 999 files.

Insert the SD card into your computer's memory card reader. Double click on the "My Computer" icon on your computer's desktop and double click on your memory card's icon, which is located underneath the "Devices with Removable Storage" heading at the middle of the screen. Right-click on the files that you no longer need and select the "Delete" tab. Remove the SD card from your computer.

Re-insert the SD card into your Brother MFC-685CW and the error message will disappear.
