How to Make Quilt Clamps
Quilting requires you to work on various areas of a quilt multiple times. Not only do you have to assemble all the pieces, you then insert batting and use stitching to raise some areas of the quilt. Because of the size it is not always optimal to use a hoop, as large areas of fabric still hang down. These can get in the way or even cause weighting issues. Instead, you can use quilt clips -- also called clamps -- to hold a rolled-up portion of the quilt together while you work on one particular area.
Instructions

1
Find inexpensive bracelets. Metal ones that have a 3- to 5-inch diameter tend to work best, as the bracelet is strong enough to handle the weight of the quilt.
-
2
Secure the bracelet in the vise to hold it still while you work with it.
-
-
3
Use the metal cutter or torch to make a slice through the bracelet. Make the cut as straight as possible.
-
4
Make a second cut about an inch or inch and a half from the first cut. This leaves a gap so you can clip the circle around the roll of the quilt.
-
5
Sand the new edges down to make them smooth. This keeps the metal from scratching or hurting the material of the quilt.
-
6
Repeat Steps 2 to 5 to make as many clamps as you need.

Tips & Warnings
You can roll up both sides of the quilt when you are working with the center.
Buy varying bracelet sizes to hold the rolled-up sides when large or small.
You can also use various sized metal rings from a hardware store that might be less expensive.
If you do not want to work with metal, you can also use plastic circles, though the cuts tend to be more difficult to make.
