You can make your own professional-looking plaque.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pencil to trace your plaque pattern onto your hardwood board.

    • 2

Cut out the plaque using a band or scroll saw. As you work your way around the pattern outline, be sure to cut on the outside of the lines rather than on the inside. Any uneven cuts can be sanded down afterward without jeopardizing the overall shape or size of the plaque.

    • 3

Use sandpaper to smooth the entire surface of the plaque. Sand any uneven edges down to the traced lines so they are no longer visible.

    • 4

Finish the plaque with satin finish polyurethane. Use a paintbrush to apply the finish, working with strokes that follow the grain of the wood. Allow the finish to dry completely before proceeding.

    • 5

Apply a thin coat of wood glue to the back side of the engraved tag and attach it to the plaque, taking care to ensure it is straight and even.

    • 6

Use a hammer to attach a picture-hanging kit to the back of the plaque.

Tips & Warnings

  • A router can be used to create a decorative border on your plaque, but this addition is optional.

  • Always use caution when operating machinery and wear all the necessary safety equipment.
