Working at night shouldn't keep you from having a social life.

Working in the evening hours can be a hindrance to meeting and making friends. There are many people who need to work evening hours who still maintain positive relationships with people who work both during the day and at night. Following a few simple tips will help you to meet people and have a good time despite your work schedule.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet people at work. Since these people are working the same shift as you, they will be available to spend time with you during the daytime hours. Ask a coworker to go for lunch or a matinee movie. Spending time with people you work with can also result in a better working relationship and increased job productivity.

    • 2

Utilize your days off to spend time with other people. Join a church group or start a hobby you can do with other people, such as bike riding, walking or scrapbooking. Using your days off to meet and spend time with people gives you the luxury of spending time in the evening with friends who work during the daytime hours or spend time where people who work during the day hang out.

    • 3

Use other friends you already have to introduce you to new people. Maybe your old college roommate knows a guy who works the same shift as you and needs a partner to shoot hoops during the day. Perhaps your best friend has a stay-at-home mom buddy who could use some company during the daytime hours. Friends you already have can be a resource for meeting new people.

    • 4

Get out during the daytime hours by yourself. Take a walk, go to the grocery store or mall or attend a daytime event. People who are out during the day may also work during the evening, so you could start up a conversation and maybe even make a new best friend.

    • 5

Take a class. This will not only expand your mind but your social circle. Many community colleges and universities offer classes during the daytime hours for people who work nights. Start up a conversation with a person you have class with and ask if she wants to do something outside of class, like grab a cup of coffee. Talk about your mutual interest in the class or your love (or dislike) of working evening hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many people now work swing shifts or evening hours, so more hobby and sports groups meet during the day. Join a group or team that has a daytime schedule to help you meet even more people.
