How to Add Text and Title Overlays in Adobe Premiere thumbnail
Use the Premiere Titler to add text and titles to video.

Text and title overlays are added to video projects to identify interview subjects and to add typed exposition for viewers. Use the built-in Adobe Premiere Title Designer to add text and titles to your video projects. In Adobe Premiere Pro, the Title Designer is simply called the Titler. No matter which version of Premiere you use, follow the same basic steps to add text and titles to your video.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the video project to which you want to add text or title overlays.

    • 2

Click on the timeline where you want to add text. The background of your text will be the video frame where you clicked.

    • 3

Create a new title by clicking the "New" icon at the bottom of the Project menu on the left side of the screen. The icon is two boxes, one in front of the other. Select "New Title" from the drop-down menu that appears.

    • 4

Name the title and click "OK." The Titler opens in a new window.

    • 5

Select a type tool from the toolbar. Choose between the regular "T" icon for standard left-to-right text or the "T" with a down arrow to type text vertically. There's also a "T" with a diagonal arrow for typing along a path. To use this, draw a shape or curved line with the Pen tool, then choose the diagonal "T" icon and click the shape to type along its path.

    • 6

Type the text or title you want to add. You'll see two rectangular borders while you type: the outside rectangle is the safe area for a 16:9 screen and the inside rectangle is the safe viewing area for a 4:3 screen. Keep your titles within these "safe" borders or they'll be cut off when viewed on a television screen.

    • 7

Change the color, font, opacity, alignment and size using the Title Properties menu. Title Properties automatically opens when you select a text tool.

    • 8

Adjust title actions in the Title Actions menu. Title Actions also opens automatically when a text tool is selected. Set how long you want the title to remain on screen and whether you want any transitions or special effects. The effects available vary depending on your version of Premiere.

Save your changes by pressing "Control" and "S" or clicking "File," "Save."
