Instructions

    • 1

Cut the top off an empty, clean plastic gallon milk jug with a sharp pair of scissors. Use the indented portion of the handled side as a guide to continue cutting. Remove the handle entirely. Set the excess plastic aside for later use.

    • 2

Set out several layers of old newspapers on a flat surface. Place your milk jug on top and begin coating it with silver acrylic paint. Allow two to four hours' drying time, or until it feels dry to the touch.

    • 3

Twist the end of a pipe cleaner around the stem of the feather plume. Poke a small hole in the top of the jug helmet using a sharp object like a pen or a screwdriver. Insert the pipe cleaner into the hole and pull it through until you hit the base of the feather. Twist the other end of the pipe cleaner to secure it in place inside the helmet, trimming the length as needed.

    • 4

Create a visor or chin strap piece using a strip from the excess plastic you removed from the jug earlier. Paint the strip with silver acrylic paint, allow it to dry and then fasten it to the helmet with brads. Create the holes for the brads using the same sharp object you used to insert the pipe cleaner. Add tape to the backs of the brads for extra stability if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Aluminum foil can be used in place of paint; simply cover the jug with sheets of aluminum foil and tuck or tape the edges underneath. Add other decorations like a crest to the helmet if desired.
