How to Replace the Lamp on a CRT Rear Projection TV
Rear projection TVs come equipped with a lamp or bulb to ensure your picture is bright and clear. As with any bulb, it eventually burns out, which results in a dim television screen. Most rear projection TVs also come with a lamp hour counter, which warns you when the bulb is close to the end of its expected lifespan. The process for replacing the lamp is similar for most televisions. However, check your user guide for specifics such as what replacement lamp to buy and where the lamp is located in your TV.

Turn off your projection television. Also, unplug it from the electrical outlet. If the television has been on, let it cool off for at least 30 minutes.

Look for the lamp cover on your television. On many televisions, the cover is located in the back of the television and secured with a screw or screws. Although with some brands, such as Panasonic, it is in the front.

Loosen and remove the screw or screws holding the cover in place. Remove the cover as well. You now have access to the lamp unit.

Loosen and remove the screw or screws securing the lamp unit inside of the television.

Look for a handle on the unit. Once you find the handle, grab it by the handle and gently pull the unit out of the television.

Insert the new lamp unit. Be sure to put it in the same way the old one was in the television. Often there is a directional arrow on the unit or the TV to indicate how to insert the unit.

Secure the lamp unit and the cover with the screws you removed.
