Turn the power supply off for the furnace at your electrical breaker box. If your furnace uses gas in addition to electric, turn off the main gas supply also.

Unscrew the screws that hold the cover in place over the access door to the firebox, or burner box, with a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 3

Vacuum the interior of the firebox, using a hose attachment on your vacuum.

    • 4

Wipe the interior walls of the firebox with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not moisten the cloth.

    • 5

Replace the access door and screw it back into place.

    • 6

Turn the power and gas supply back on to your furnace.
