How to Declutter a Craft Room

Use jars and other household items to hold craft tools.

Crafters, like automotive mechanics, place extra resources and used tools to the side while working on a craft. They don't usually stop in the middle of a project to pick up. Over time, these resources and tools clutter the room if they aren't put away, making it hard to find the tool or craft item you need. Declutter your craft room by grouping similar items, organizing your tools and storing odds and ends for quick retrieval.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a plan with a purpose. Ask yourself if you simply want to make the room look tidier or if you want it organized in a certain way. Write the plan on a piece of paper, broken into steps and with a deadline assigned to each step.

    • 2

Tackle one part of the craft room at a time. If you divide the room into the type of craft then only work on one craft at once. Otherwise, divide the room into sections and finish one section before moving to another.

    • 3

Use household items instead of store-bought products. You can buy storage items, but household items save money and allow you to use items that weren't useful before. A glass can hold pens, pencils and other small objects. A plastic container from the kitchen can hold papers, yarn or decorations.

    • 4

Create a “miscellaneous” section that fits into one container about the size of a shoe box. You may need these odds and ends to wrap up a future project. The box keeps them in a place you can refer to without much searching.

    • 5

Group similar objects together. For example, place glue, scissors, tape and other stuff you use often on the desk. Store paper in its own container but in part of the room with paper-decorating materials.

    • 6

Hang tools on one wall for quick access. A tack can hold up a small container of markers or colored pencils, a clipboard or ruler. Arrange by use. Place coloring tools in one section and knitting tools in another.
