It is easy to make a graduation tassel for a kid.

Moving the tassel during a graduation ceremony is a symbolic representation of the graduate’s accomplishments. Many graduation caps come with tassels already attached to the cap, but if you want to change the appearance of the tassel or create a different color combination, then you can easily make your own tassel to wear with the hat. Making a tassel is not difficult, and takes just a few minutes to complete. When the tassel is finished, it should look just like the tassels that come with some graduation caps.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of cardboard about 5 inches wide and 10 inches tall.

    • 2

Wrap the thread around the 10-inch side of cardboard about 80 times. Tie a small piece of cord around all of the threads and secure with a knot.

    • 3

Cut the bottom of the threads in half on the side opposite the knot. Fold the threads in half along the knotted end. Loop a 24-inch section of thread around the knot and form a loop to secure the tassel to the top of the hat.

    • 4

Wrap a thread about 20 times around the tassel about 1 inch down from the knot at the top. Trim the bottom of the tassel so that all of the strings are an even size.

    • 5

Hook the loop around the top of the graduation hat. Shorten the loop to make the tassel just hang off of the side of the graduation cap.
