DIY Handmade Owl Pillows With Felt

Owl-themed projects can be exceptionally versatile. When executed well, owl imagery is easily recognizable regardless of color, which allows crafters the opportunity to make custom color selections for their birds. The wise, winged creature also remains recognizable with a wide range of facial expressions, allowing for yet another creative interpretation of traditional owl iconography. Crafting a felt pillow in the shape of an owl requires that the crafter adhere to only a few basic guidelines before adding a personalized combination of details.

  • 2 gray felt squares
  • 1 white felt square
  • 1 orange felt square

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two rounded shapes 6 inches in diameter from the gray pieces of felt. The measurement and shape of the pieces do not need to be exact, just close. They should be identical or near-identical, though. Cut both pieces of felt at the same time to ensure they are similar in size.

    • 2

Lay the two pieces side-by-side on your work surface. Apply a narrow line of hot glue around the edge of the shape. Leave a 2-inch gap bare. Layer the round pieces on top of each other, matching the shapes the best you can. This is the body of the owl.

    • 3

Fill the body with fluff material by feeding it into the shape through the 2-inch gap until the body is full. Apply a narrow line of glue to the 2-inch opening. Press the felt pieces together. Set the pillow aside.

    • 4

Cut two 1-inch long teardrop shapes out of gray felt. Apply a peppercorn-sized bead of glue in the middle of each shape. Pinch the felt teardrops from underneath. The pinch line should run up-and-down the teardrop shape. Set the pinched pieces aside. These will be the ears.

    • 5

Cut a half-circle out of the white felt. The shape should be about 4 inches across at its base. It should resemble a filled U-shape. Cut two rounded triangles from the white felt. They should be 2 inches wide at the base, 2 inches tall and resemble candy corns.

    • 6

Apply glue to one side of the large white semi-circle. Press the glued side to the pillow, with the rounded side pointing down. Line up the round side of the white piece with the round edge of the body. This is the owl's midsection.

    • 7

Place the rounded triangle pieces above the midsection with the points aimed up, at a slight outward angle. Apply glue to the underside of each piece. Press them back in place on the owl body. These are the eye areas on the owl's face.

    • 8

Apply a bead of glue to the top of the owl. Line the bottom of the ear pieces up with the points of the white eye areas. Press the wide end of each gray teardrop into the glue. The ears should point directly up.

    • 9

Cut a small square from the orange felt. The square should be no more than 1-inch wide. Apply hot glue to one side of the square. Turn the square at an angle so that it becomes a diamond-shape. Press the square into the middle of the owl, between the midsection and eye areas. This is the beak.

    • 10

Cut shapes out of the remaining gray or black felt to create the eyes. Glue them in the middle of the white eye areas.
