How to Edit or Shorten a Song thumbnail
Shorten songs to create your own ring tones.

Editing or shortening a song file allows you to remove intros, outros and other undesirable parts of the song. Shorten a song to the length of a ringtone, then use it on a cell phone that supports custom ring tones. You can edit out portions of a song with a variety of tools, including Apple’s iTunes music software, the free Audacity audio-editing program or a website such as MP3Cut.net.

Instructions

    • 1

Use Apple iTunes to shorten a song. Right-click the song in iTunes and click “Get Info.” Click the “Options” tab at the top of the information window that appears, check the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” boxes on the options pane and type the new start and stop times into the boxes. Click “OK,” right-click the song and click “Create AAC Version.” ITunes creates a new song file without the excluded parts.

Download and install the free Audacity audio editor from Sourceforge.net. Open your song file in Audacity by clicking “File” and “Open” in the Audacity window. Click the I-shaped “Selection Tool” button at the top of the window, click and drag inside the waveform image of the song to select a part to edit out, then click “Edit” and “Cut” to remove the selected part of the song. Click the “File” menu and select “Export” to save the edited song file.
