How to Filter Labeled Emails Out of Gmail Inbox

Assigning different labels to each of your emails in your Gmail account can clutter your inbox unless you archive them. To keep these labeled emails in your inbox instead of archiving them but hide them, you must filter out the labeled emails from the inbox. Since Gmail lacks a specific feature to do this, you must create a special search term to hide certain labeled emails.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your Gmail account and click on the search bar next to the "Search Mail" button. Type "label:inbox" followed by a space.

    • 2

Add "-label:" without quotes followed by the name of a label you wish to filter out. Add another space along with another "-label:" if you wish to hide multiple labels. For instance, if you wish to filter out the "Bulk" and "Notifications" labels, your search mail text box will look like this: label:inbox -label:bulk -label:notifications.

    • 3

Click the "Search Mail" button to filter out your chosen labels so you can see more unlabeled inbox emails.

Tips & Warnings

  • As you type a label, Gmail tries to predict which label you're trying to enter. Click from that list so you won't make typing any errors.
