How to Fix Banging in a Stackable Washer
Washing machines can be finicky appliances, so unless you load them just right they may become unbalanced. If the load of laundry in your washing machine is not balanced correctly, the machine may begin to rock and sway. This not only causes a loud banging noise, but, if your washer and dryer are stacked, it may eventually shake loose the housing keeping the two appliances together. If your stackable washer begins banging, take immediate action to remedy the situation to prevent your washer from becoming permanently damaged. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Stop the cycle the washer is currently in. For most washers, opening the door is enough to stop the cycle, but you can also push or pull the knob, depending on the particular model you have.
-
2
Look inside the washing machine to see if you can determine the source of the problem. Large loads frequently become unbalanced when you are trying to wash heavy items like jeans and towels. When a load becomes unbalanced, you will find that a majority of the items have shifted and become concentrated on one side of the washer.

3
Redistribute the clothing evenly throughout the washer. Rather than tossing heavy items in balls into the washer, drape them around the detergent receptacle. Drape your first item on the left side of the washer, the next item on the right, then the next two at the top and bottom. This method ensures that the load in your washer will be properly balanced.

4
Drain the washer if you desire. When the washer becomes unbalanced, it may prevent your clothes from getting evenly washed, so it may be a good idea to simply restart the process. To drain your washer, turn the knob to the rinse or spin cycle.
-
5
Close the door and restart the washer by turning the knob to the desired setting. Any detergent or fabric softener you used has already been absorbed by your clothes so it is unnecessary to add it again.
-
6
Keep an eye on the washer as it enters the spin cycle to ensure that the load is properly balanced. Avoid overfilling your washer to prevent future problems with banging and unbalanced loads.
