How to Change a Fixture on a Pedestal Sink

How to Change a Fixture on a Pedestal Sink thumbnail
Pedestal sinks come in a variety of styles.

A pedestal sink is free standing, having no cabinet underneath the basin. These sinks attach to the wall with mounting hardware. The fixtures of a pedestal sink are usually limited to the faucet and faucet handles because of the lack of space around the basin. The fixtures connect to the bathroom plumbing, so you will need to remove these connections to replace the fixture. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the hot and cold water. Cover the floor with towels because there might still be water in the lines.

    • 2

Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply lines from the hot and cold water supply. Loosen the nuts holding the fixture in place on the underside of the sink using a basin wrench. Remove the nuts and gaskets.

    • 3

Remove the screw holding the pop-up stopper to the actuator arm. Pull the stopper off the arm. Not all pedestal sinks have pop-up stoppers, so if yours does not, you can skip this step.

    • 4

Pull the old faucet up and away from the sink. The lines and pop-up arm will come up through their respective holes. Wipe the sink surface with a damp cloth to remove any old grime and plumber's putty.

    • 5

Form a ring of plumber's putty in your hand and place it on the bottom edge of the new fixture plate. Push the plate into place and thread the new lines through the appropriate fixture holes.

    • 6

Push the new gaskets onto the mounting rod of the new fixtures. Tighten the nuts over the gaskets with the basin wrench.

    • 7

Connect the hot and cold lines to the hot and cold water supply pipes. Slip the pop-up drain over the actuator arm and tighten the screw.
