Trim all relaxed hair off. Keep your hair that is not relaxed. This will allow your hair to grow quicker and fuller so you can have the full shape of an Afro. Relaxed hair makes your hair straight. If your hair is transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, then some of your hair will be straighter than the other hair. This causes your hair to tangle and leads to breakage, so cut the relaxed hair.

Find the right hair care products that will best benefit your hair texture. Having the right hair products will help your Afro maintain shine, length and thickness. If your hair is really dry, get products that help maintain moisture. Cocoa butter, shea butter and aloe vera are a few products that help provide nutrients to the hair and prevent hair breakage. Also, let your hair air dry after washing. This will retain moisture in your hair. Try a good leave‐in conditioner or a hot oil treatment for dry hair.

Protective hairstyles, such as braids, weaves and twists are good for hair growth only if they are not tight against to your scalp and you create time to let your real hair breathe.
