DIY Square Stool Cushion

DIY Square Stool Cushion thumbnail
Stools are useful, but are more comfortable with a cushion.

If you have a square-seated stool that you'd like to add some extra padding to, you can create a homemade cushion yourself. Although the task may seem intimidating, in truth it is quite simple and doesn't require extensive sewing experience. Plus, making the cushion yourself will give you two major advantages -- the appearance of the cushion as well as the price. For much less money than you'd spend purchasing a ready-made cushion, you can create a customized cushion that is the perfect size for your stool in the fabric pattern of your choice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of butcher paper over the seat of your stool. Trace the shape of the seat using a marker.

    • 2

Cut the pattern out with scissors.

    • 3

Double over the fabric of your choice so that there are two layers, with the decorative sides facing each other. Secure the butcher paper pattern to the fabric using sewing pins.

    • 4

Cut both layers of the fabric to match the pattern. Remove the pins and the pattern, then re-pin the pieces of fabric around the perimeter. Keep the decorative sides facing each other so that the cushion appears inside out.

    • 5

Sew around the perimeter of the fabric using a needle and thread, staying about 1/2 inch away from the edge for a strong hem line. Stop sewing when there are about 2 inches of open space left.

    • 6

Turn the cushion case right-side out through the small hole you left open. Shove some cotton stuffing into the case, using a wooden dowel to push the stuffing into the corners.

    • 7

Sew the remaining 2 inches shut after you have finished stuffing the cushion.

    • 8

Cut 8 6-inch lengths of matching ribbon. Hot glue two lengths of ribbon to each corner. Apply the glue on the bottom of the cushion, with the ends of the ribbon next to each other. Use the ribbon to tie the cushion to the stool.
