How to Make Graphics Into Watermarks

A watermark is a special type of graphic that is put it over photos or images to mark them as your own. When anyone else uses the image, on their website, for instance, it will retain your watermark. This makes the watermark more effective than a caption or photo credit in protecting and identifying your work. Your watermark could be any unique image, but often just contains the photographer's logo or name. You can turn a graphic into a watermark by following a couple of simple steps. Unfortunately, no program that comes with Windows is available for creating watermarks. You will need a photo editing program like Photoshop, Irfanview or GIMP.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your graphic in the photo editing software program of your choice. (Find links to three popular choices in Resources.)

    • 2

Erase any background in the image. If you see white space, erase it. Most programs will show a grey and white checked background to indicate no image.

    • 3

Change the image’s opacity to 50%. This will make it visible, but partially see-through, like a watermark.

    • 4

Save the image as a GIF file. This is key, since GIF files support opacity and clear backgrounds (JPEGs do not). You now have a watermark file that you can place in the corner of any picture.
