How to Customize Your Dorm Room
Dorm rooms are small and cramped and you're usually sharing the space with another person. Nevertheless, the dorm room is your own space away from your parents and, although a dorm room is not permanent, you're going to be spending quite a bit of time in it. Not only do surroundings affect mood and study habits, but the appearance of your dorm room reflects on you. A customized dorm room lets people know what kind of person you are the moment they step into the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Organization
-
1
Set up some closet organizers in your closet, under your bed and around your work station to prevent clutter from forming. Organizers can be plastic bins, metal shelves or even do-it-yourself cardboard drawer systems.
-
2
Prop your bed up on some concrete or wooden blocks to provide extra storage space or, if allowed, purchase or rent a loft bed or bunk bed.
-
-
3
Use curtains to cloak your closet, separate your space from your roommate's space or divide your sleeping area from your work area.
Decor
-
4
Hang some curtains over the window. Custom curtains can be hung from existing curtain rods or simply held over the window using thumb tacks.
-
5
Decorate the walls with pictures, posters, vinyl wall decals or other wall art. Use frames for pictures and posters to give your room a more mature appearance.
-
6
Choose unique bedding. Blankets, comforters and pillows not only make your bed more comfortable but can be both stylish and unique.
Ambience
-
7
Add lamps for extra lighting. Use soft light near your sleeping area and bright light around your work area.
-
8
Use plenty of deodorizer. Don't overdo it with perfume smells but keep your room smelling fresh. It helps to do laundry regularly and avoid leaving food sitting out.
-
9
Invest in a radio or CD player and keep some background music playing (when you're not studying.) Music can say as much about you as your decor does.

Check the dorm policies before removing furniture, adding furniture or using any hardware that may permanently affect the room (such as curtain rods or wall screws.)
Get to know your roommate. If you and your roommate share the same tastes, you can work together to create a fabulous dorm room.
