How to Read a Waveform Monitor

A waveform monitor is the interface that displays an audio waveform file in a graphic format. Audio editing tools all contain some sort of visual representation of waveforms for editing. To read a waveform monitor, open a waveform file in an audio editing program. A graph appears with visual representations of audio waves. The waveform monitor window is utilized for editing the WAV file. The best way to read a waveform monitor is to play the WAV file and observe the progression of the graph while the audio file plays.

      Open the WAV file in an audio editing program, such as Audacity or Pro Tools. The file opens in the audio editor and a visual display of the waveform is shown.

      Click the “Play” button. Allow the audio file to play and observe the movement of the cursor over the waveform graph.

      Click the top ruler on the top of the waveform monitor to specify “Start” and “End” points for editing the WAV file. For example, to cut a portion from the audio file. Click the “Start” point inside the ruler, and then click the “End” point. Click “Edit”from the top navigation bar and then click “Cut.” The specified portion of the WAV file is cut from the waveform monitor.
