How to Weld Keys
Welding keys that are damaged is not a difficult task, but you must know how to use brazing equipment. Keys are made out of brass because it is a soft metal that is easy for key-smiths to cut. To weld keys, you must braze them using an oxygen-acetylene welder with a flux-coated brazing rod.
Things You'll Need

- Welding goggles
- Welding jacket
- Grinder
- Oxygen-acetylene welder
- Brazing rods

1
Clean the metal free from any debris on your keys using your grinder. You want to expose the metal to ensure a strong weld.
-
2
Place the two pieces of metal 1/16-inch apart and in the position that they need to be welded in.
-
-
3
Coat a welding rod in flux and set it aside.
-
4
Hold your torch in your dominant hand and heat the keys with your torch until they are red hot. Do not melt them.
-
5
Hold your flux-coated welding rod in your non-dominant hand. Heat it up with the torch and drip the rod into the gap between the keys. Let the key cool before use.
