How to Make Recyclable Rings
Sometimes, you just can’t find the jewelry you want. Instead of hunting for a certain ring to complete your outfit, make your own with recycled materials from around your house. While you may not be able to make a recycled metal ring, you do have the materials to make a decorative and flashy ring from plastic.
Things You'll Need
- Soda bottle
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brush
- Clear flat glass marble
- Hot glue gun

1
Unscrew the lid off of a soda bottle or orange juice bottle. Set the lid aside. Pull the white plastic ring off the mouth of the bottle. Carefully cut the sharp white pieces off of the ring.
-
2
Cut the fabric of your choice into long, thin strips that are no larger than half an inch thick. Squeeze a small bead of hot glue on the inside of the plastic ring. Press the end of one fabric strip over the glue. Firmly press down on end of the fabric to bond it to the glue.

3
Wind the strip of fabric tightly around the ring. Over lap the fabric with each turn. Overlapping your fabric ensures that none of the white ring is exposed. Wrap the ring as tightly as possible. Periodically place a small bead of glue on the fabric before wrapping it around the ring. This keeps the rest of the fabric in place. Once you wrap the entire ring, cut off the excess fabric from your strip and glue down the end. Hold the end down to bond it to the glue.

4
Cut the sides off of the plastic bottle top. Gently cut open the plastic glued to the inside of the tip. Pry it away from the top and discard. Carefully cut away any remaining plastic from the sides. Place a clear, flat glass marble on top of the plastic disc. Cut the sides of the disc until it is the same size and shape as the flat marble.
-
5
Paint the disc of plastic with acrylic paint and let fully dry. Use a darker colored paint or colors that coat well.
-
6
Spread a thin layer of hot glue on the plastic disc. Sprinkle glitter over the glue. Blow off the excess glitter and let dry. Spread another thin layer of hot glue on the bottom of the flat glass marble. Place the marble glue side down on top of the glittered disc. Let dry.
-
7
Place a bead of hot glue on the bottom of the disc, directly in the center. Put the ring on the glue and press it together. Let dry.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of using flat glass marbles and paint, cover your plastic disc with more fabric or paint designs on it. You do not have to use the disc.
Use scraps of old records and heat them up in the oven. Mold the scraps to fit your finger. However, do not place the hot material against your skin.
Always exercise caution when handling hot glue.
