How to Plant a Sweet Annie

Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is an annual that self-seeds. Once you plant the aromatic herb, it will most likely establish in your garden, providing new Sweet Annie plants year after year. Sweet Annie grows from seed or seedling, and is not particular about soil, as long as it is well-draining and does not become boggy after watering or rain. Sweet Annie is not known for beauty, but it makes up for that with its pleasant scent. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. From Seed

    • 1

Prepare an area of your garden that receives full sun. Loosen soil with a garden spade. Sweet Annie does fine in poor soils, but you may work in some compost if you choose.
      Do this in early spring.

    • 2

Moisten the soil an inch deep with a garden hose. Sprinkle the Sweet Annie seeds on the moist soil.

    • 3

Rake soil loosely over the seeds, covering them barely. Keep the seeds consistently moist until they grow.

    • 4

Thin plants to 4 feet apart when they are 4 inches tall.

    From Transplant

    • 5

Choose a sunny area with well-draining soil to plant your Sweet Annie. Work the soil at least 2 inches deeper than the plant to aerate it and give the roots some breathing room as the plant establishes. For example, if the Sweet Annie is 4 inches from crown to base, work soil down at least 6 inches.

    • 6

Remove the Sweet Annie plant gently from its pot, unless it is in a peat pot. In a peat pot, trim off the top lip of the pot down to the potting soil level, and plant the entire pot.

    • 7

Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the plant to the depth it was planted in the pot. Place the Sweet Annie into the hole, and fill in the hole.

    • 8

Place additional Sweet Annie plants 4 feet apart to allow plenty of growing room.

    • 9

Water Sweet Annie with a garden hose until water reaches the roots. Keep the plants moist but not sodden as they take root in the soil.
