How to Craft a Heart Pinwheel

How to Craft a Heart Pinwheel thumbnail
Homemade pinwheels provide entertainment for kids when the craft is finished.

A pinwheel turns lazily in the breeze, adding whimsy to an otherwise gray winter's day. Upon closer inspection, red and pink hearts adorn each wheel. A young girl spies it from the window. She smiles and points, calling, "Mom! Can I make a pinwheel today?" Craft a heart pinwheel to send as a thoughtful gift, decorate for Valentine's Day or to spend quality time with your kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an 8-by-8-inch square from white construction paper.

    • 2

Use a ruler and a pencil to draw four diagonal lines, bisecting the square into four triangles.

    • 3

Draw a 1-inch circle at the center of the square, where all four diagonal lines meet.

    • 4

Decorate both sides of the square as desired with markers, crayons, glitter or heart stickers, or cut small red hearts from the red construction paper and glue onto the white paper.

    • 5

Cut each diagonal line, starting at the corner and stopping when you reach the edge of the center circle. You will have four triangles, each still connected to the center of the original square.

    • 6

Cut a 1-1/2-inch heart from the red paper.

    • 7

Pull the top corner of each triangle down, toward the circle in the center. Place the corners on top of each other and hold carefully while placing the 1-1/2-inch heart on top of the corners.

    • 8

Push the pin through the center of the heart, making sure it passes through each corner of the triangles.

    • 9

Push the pin through the straw.

    • 10

Press the cork to the back of the pin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Substitute a new pencil eraser for a cork or card stock for construction paper.

  • Adult supervision is recommended during the push pin phase of the project.
