Keep the rear vents on a heater clean to avoid a fire hazard.

Ceramic tower heaters are easy to transport and require a minimum of floor space because of their upright design. Electricity flows into a heater through ceramic plates to heat the air. The heat is absorbed by aluminum baffles and then it blows into a room with a fan to distribute warm air. According to Danny Lipford of Today’s Homeowner, “Ceramic heaters tend to be more energy efficient and safer than many heaters, so even though they heat up quickly, their plastic casings stay cool.” The vents must remain clean in the rear of a ceramic heater -- where air is sucked into the system. Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the heater power cord and allow the heater to cool completely.

    • 2

Remove any loose debris and dust by placing a cleaning brush on a vacuum cleaner and suctioning the rear vents on the ceramic heater.

    • 3

Make a mild cleaning solution with water and dishwashing liquid. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and wring it out so it is only moist.

    • 4

Wipe the rear vents of the heater, starting at the top and working to the bottom of the heater. Re-moisten the cloth as needed. Place a butter knife in the cloth to reach the inside of each vent and wipe it side to side.

    • 5

Dry the heater vents with a towel. Allow the vents to air dry completely before plugging in the heater power cord.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place ceramic heaters in their original box in when storing to keep dust from accumulating on the heater.

  • Do not attempt to operate a heater until it is completely dry to avoid a shock hazard or a short circuit.
