How to Join Knit Work in the Round on Double Point Needles

In knitting, double-pointed needles are used when there are too few stitches to comfortably fit on a circular needle. Once you've cast on to your double-pointed needles, using the same method as straight knitting, and distributed the stitches evenly over the needles, you will need to join your work in the round. Although it may appear complicated, learning to knit in the round is an ideal way to produce seamless knitting projects, like socks and mittens.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up and hold the double-pointed needles so that the start of the cast-on row is in your left hand and the end of the cast-on row is in your right hand.

    • 2

Place a stitch marker after the last stitch on your right-hand needle to indicate when you have finished knitting each round.

    • 3

Using the empty double-pointed needle, knit or purl the first stitch on the left-hand needle as normal. Pull the yarn tightly to avoid creating a hole in your work.

    • 4

Continue until all the stitches on the first needle are worked. Now that the first needle is empty, use this to knit the stitches on the next needle.

    • 5

Continue working until you reach the stitch marker and then slip it to the right needle before commencing the second round.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using four double-pointed needles, distribute the cast-on stitches over three needles and keep the fourth empty for knitting. For five double-pointed needles, distribute stitches over four needles and keep the fifth empty for knitting.
