How to Kill Flies in a Mushroom Compost

Mushroom compost is very useful in helping mushrooms grow. Unfortunately, mushrooms are not the only organisms that take advantage of the nutrients the compost provides. Mushroom compost attracts flies because they can lay their eggs in the softened mushrooms and other material. Once the eggs hatch, the fly problem only gets worse. Regular diligence is needed to get rid of a fly problem in mushroom compost. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place a fly trap in with your mushrooms so flies get stuck to it. Once they're trapped, they'll starve to death or you can kill them manually.

    • 2

Coat the inside of the compost bag with vegetable oil. It will trap the flies in it much like flypaper and they'll die as a result.

    • 3

Place nematodes in with the mushroom compost. They are small worms that will feed on the flies and protect the compost in the process.
