1
Measure the area you have defined as your work nook. It is important to write down the width, height and depth of the area so you can appropriately plan for your project.
-
2
Decide on the style you want for your DIY desk or hutch in the nook. If you want a more contemporary style, then opt for darker-stained wood in your DIY project. For a more traditional look, opt for birch, oak and pine and keep it unstained, paint it white or stain it with a lighter color.

Cut a piece of wood for your desktop; this wood should measure to fit horizontally in your unit. You should have it high enough that when you sit down, your chair slides comfortably under the desk. The wood should also be deep enough for the type of personal work space you need. Stain the wood before adding it to the shelving. Mount the wood with shelving brackets -- add it to the nook space as you would a deep shelf.

4
Add shelves above the desk space -- these will be useful for storing your books, craft supplies and other tools. Accessorize with coordinating vases, a cute chair and a soft pile rug. Your nook will be a haven for hard work and enjoyable reading.
