How to Replace the Ignitor on a Kenmore Model # 110-74812200

The burner in your Kenmore model 110-74812200 ignites using an ignitor. When the dryer does not heat up properly, it might be time to replace the ignitor. Replacing the ignitor on your Kenmore requires some disassembly of the dryer cabinet. However, there is no need to disassemble the burner assembly. Replacement ignitors are available through Sears and appliance repair centers. When changing the ignitor, avoid holding it by the base or the thin metal as this can cause damage and prevent the ignitor from operating properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Remove Bad Ignitor

    • 1

Unplug the Kenmore gas dryer power cord from the dryer outlet, and turn off the gas valve behind the dryer. The gas valve should be perpendicular to the gas pipe when it's in the “Off” position.

    • 2

Open the lint trap on the top of the Kenmore dryer, and remove the two screws on the front lip of the opening with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the lint screen out of the lint trap cavity, just as you would when cleaning it.

    • 3

Slide a putty knife between the top and front panel of the dryer, four inches from either corner. The putty knife will slide over a spring clip securing the top panel. Lift up on the top front corner of the dryer once you slide the putty knife over the spring clip. Raise the top panel back toward the wall and let it stay in the service position.

    • 4

Unhook the door switch connector from the dryer door behind the front panel. The connector has small tabs on the side. Lift the tabs with your fingers as you pull the connector apart. Find the screws on the inside front corner of the dryer cabinet securing the front panel to the sides. Remove the screws, and tilt the top of the front panel toward you. Lift up on the front panel and set it to the side.

    • 5

Find the wire connector for the burner ignitor. The ignitor is on a bracket to the left of the burner assembly. It looks like a square piece of ceramic with a flat piece of metal pointing inside the burner can. Pull the wire connector apart with your fingers.

    • 6

Loosen the screw securing the burner ignitor to the bracket with a wrench. Loosen the screw just enough to remove the ignitor. Grab the ignitor wires near the back of the ignitor, and push the ignitor forward until the ceramic base is free from the securing screws. The ceramic base has a notch that slides over the neck of the screws. Pull the ignitor out of the Kenmore dryer.

    Install New Ignitor

    • 7

Hold the new ignitor by its two wires, leaving space in between the wires so you form a loop for the bracket mounting screw. Insert the ignitor into the bracket in front of the mounting screws. Gently pull the ignitor toward the front of the dryer, lining the mounting screw inside the notch.

    • 8

Tighten the bracket mounting screw with a wrench. Plug the ignitor connector into the dryer connector until it is tight.

    • 9

Position the bottom tabs of the front panel into the slots in the base of the dryer. Re-secure the top of the front panel to the dryer sides with the retaining screws. Push the door switch connector back into place until it locks. Lower the dryer top and push down on the front to engage the spring clip.

    • 10

Turn the gas valve back to the “On” position, and plug the dryer cord into the outlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice installing the ignitor with the old one. This helps prevent accidentally damaging the new ignitor. The two wires will go around the mounting screw, enabling you to pull the ignitor base into place correctly.
