How to Draw a Cartoon Character in Flash CS5
Although it doesn’t offer the large collection of drawing and painting tools some of the other Adobe Creative Suite programs provide, the Flash CS5 software gives digital designers a small palette to work with. Create and animate -- or just doodle -- a cartoon character of your own using Flash CS5’s features. Draw something out of a nightmare or a dream and let Flash put your cartoon character drawing literally on center stage.

1
Launch Flash CS5. Click the “Flash Document” link under the “Create New” section of the welcome screen.
-
2
Click the small drop-down menu just above the timeline. Choose “Fit in Window.” This enlarges the stage, your drawing canvas.
-
-
3
Select the paintbrush icon in the “Tools” section on the left side of the stage. Click into the first colored square under the “Colors” section, to the right of the pencil icon. Choose a color for the outline of the cartoon character, such as a bright neon for alien skin.
-
4
Click the second drop-down menu from the bottom of the section. Choose a thickness for the cartoon character’s outline. You may want to choose a thicker tip for the outline and thinner tip for finer drawing, such as facial features.
-
5
Position the cursor on the stage and draw the character’s head and body. For a full-color cartoon character, click the paint bucket icon on the “Tools” section and click inside the outline, which fills it with color.
-
6
Switch paint colors and brush tip sizes if desired. Draw other elements of the cartoon character, such as big googly eyes, head antennae, bushy hair, claws, a tail and clothing.
-
7
Click the “File” menu. Click “Save As.” Type a name for the Flash file and click the “Save” button.
