How to Start a Manga Club at Middle School
Manga is the Japanese word for "comics" and refers to a Japanese comics style that was created in the 19th century. Americans of all ages read Manga of different genres — from humor to romance to action and adventure. Young people read Manga for entertainment as well as art appreciation and storytelling. To start a Manga club at your school, you must acquire sponsorship and permission and recruit members.

1
Consult with the club coordinator or school principal to make sure that a Manga club, or something similar, such as a Japanese anime club, does not already exist. Duplicating a club only divides people with common interests.
-
2
Research your school’s requirements for starting and maintaining a club. You may need to compose a short paragraph about the purpose, function, meeting days and hours; submit your proposal for organizing a manga club. Your school may already have a proposal form in place, or you may need to write and submit this form on your own.

3
Find a teacher or other adult staff to sponsor your group. Teachers, counselors, student advisers and teachers' assistants may qualify as club sponsors. This sponsor oversees your club meetings and events and helps you to organize your activities in a professional manner.
-
4
Recruit club members. Make and print simple fliers; distribute them around school. Include a simple advertisement in the school bulletin or newspaper. Spread the news about your manga club by word of mouth. State meeting dates and times.
-
5
Conduct an introductory meeting. Lead the meeting and ask for suggestions about meeting topics and short-term and long-term club goals. If your club is organized just for fun, have members discuss and agree on this objective.
-
6
Create structure for your club to help it operate smoothly. Elect officers and define each person’s duties. Some students will want to be more involved than others and they will assume roles with more responsibility.

Collect any waivers or permission slips required to meet on school property and take club field trips. Teachers, parents and necessary school staff must be aware of your activity and they must sign off with their approval on the appropriate documents.
