How to Disassemble a Trombone Valve
A trombone valve must be disassembled for proper maintenance, and proper maintenance can make a valve last several years longer than it would without regular, detailed cleaning. Once every six months, take apart your valve by removing the parts in the appropriate order. Clean, oil and return the parts in the reverse fashion.

1
Remove the valve section from the bell and the tuning slide. Remove all tuning slides. These parts come apart from each other with a slight twist and pull. Set these parts on a clean towel to prevent damaging them.
-
2
Remove the rod screw from the first valve section to release it from the second valve section. Untwist the screw using a common flat-head screwdriver.
-
-
3
Set the “Gb” trigger on your trombone to the unengaged position by pressing it in and releasing.
-
4
Loosen the side cap screw between the two valves using an Allen wrench. Check again that the “Gb” trigger is not engaged and remove the second valve section. Place it on the towel.
-
5
Locate the screw that connects the stop arm and the valve. Use the Allen wrench to remove the set screw and take off the stop arm. The “F” arm comes to the resting position slowly.
-
6
Locate the cross brace that connects the “Gb” tuning slide to the “F” tuning slide. See a diagram of these slides for quick reference.
-
7
Grasp the valve lock ring with your thumb and middle finger. Loosen the lock ring until it comes out from the outer valve casing.
-
8
Remove the top plate and the valve from the valve casing carefully and slowly. These pieces come out when the lock ring is loosened. Set the pieces on the clean towel.
