DIY Kids Chalkboard Walls
Trading traditional wall paint for chalk paint to create a chalkboard wall is a feasible project for any room with open wall space. When the weather cools down, and fingers are too frozen to decorate the driveway with sidewalk chalk, it’s nice to know this type of doodling can move indoors. Little artists will love scribbling on something besides paper, and older children can use chalkboard walls for homework and general reminders. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Wash the wall thoroughly. If you plan to cover just a portion of a wall rather than the entire area, mark off the area with painter’s tape.
-
2
Prep the surface area. Fill any holes, cracks or gouges with lightweight spackling, smooth it out with a putty knife and let it dry. Sand the area with #220 grit paper until the surface is smooth, and wipe away any remaining dust with a clean, dry cloth. This space must be completely free of dirt and dust before applying chalkboard paint.

Paint the area with a brush, or use a roller if you prefer. Two or three applications of paint works best, but make sure each coat dries completely before applying the next one. Once the final coat of paint has dried, try not to write on the surface for at least one week.

Once a week has passed and the paint has dried completely, prepare the chalkboard for use by rubbing a piece of chalk, lengthwise, across the entire area, and wipe the residue off with a damp cloth.
