How to Fan Fold a Window Scarf

With the right technique, you can create pleated or fan-folded window scarves. Instead of covering a window with draperies or full curtains, a home owner may wish to opt for simple window scarves. The long lengths of material wrap around and swag under a traditional curtain rod. Adding pleats, or fan-folds to the material gives the look a more finished or elegant appearance. Always measure and cut the scarf material before beginning the pleating or folding process. Folding does not change the length of the scarf, only the width. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the window scarf flat on a clean, dry area, wrong side up. Be sure the area allows full access to the scarf.

    • 2

Measure the desired width of the fan-fold starting at the length edge of the material. Decide how wide you want the fan fold. Fold over the desired width, align the edges and pin in place. This will place the right side of the material facing up.

    • 3

Iron the edge of the first fold. Heat an iron to medium heat and iron the fold flat. Leave the pins in place.

    • 4

Fold the first measured area under the scarf to match the first fold width. Align the material and pin in place.

    • 5

Repeat folding the material up and under, pinning the edges to hold in place until the entire scarf is folded.

    • 6

Iron the all the folds flat using an iron on medium heat. This will set the fan-folds in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • For equal fan-folds, measure the entire width of the scarf and divide into an equal number. For example, if a scarf is 24-inches wide, create four, 6-inch folds.

  • Some materials will not hold the fan folds as well as other material. Use a bit of spray starch to stiffen the folds and tie the ends of the scarf together to hold them in place.
