Upside-down tomato cages look like tree topiaries.

Grapevine trees are miniature, Christmas tree-shaped topiaries. These minitrees can become part of a small holiday village or frame your entryway’s sides. In small spaces, grapevine trees are a small, elegant alternative to a traditional tree. Although many craft stores sell these trees during the holiday season, you can make them from household items. They’re sometimes called upside-down trees because their frames are often overturned tomato cages. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut about 20 4-inch pieces of craft wire with wire nips. These wire pieces hold the grapevine in place on the frame.

    • 2

Turn the tomato cage upside-down so the round opening sits on your work surface. The cage should already resemble a Christmas tree.

    • 3

Press the grapevine wreath’s end against one of the vertical support wires in the upside-down cage. Thread a 4-inch wire through the grapevine garland and twist it around the vertical support like a twist tie.

    • 4

Wrap the grapevine in snug, closely spaced coils all the way up the upside-down tomato cage. Secure it to the vertical supports with wires. Thread any extra wires between the coils of grapevine to hold them together.

    • 5

Cut away the excess grapevine at the top of the tomato cage. Wire the end of the grapevine to the supports sticking up from the top of the cage. All of the wire on the cage should be covered.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decorate your upside-down grapevine tree with holiday lights, dried fruit, ribbon and small holiday ornaments.
