Show your appreciation for a job well-done with a generous gratuity.

A great hairstylist can take a hair don’t and turn it into a hairdo. That’s why it’s important to show appreciation to your local hair "magician." At the end of your next haircut or coloring appointment, don't forget to tip the stylist who owns his own business. Whether you visit a pricey salon or your neighborhood haircutting place, tipping the salon owner who cuts your hair, your regular hairstylist or the colorist is a simple way to say thanks for a beautiful hairstyle.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the tipping rules. According to Emily Post’s website, a salon gratuity is normally between 15 to 20 percent. Split the tip among the service professionals. For example: the colorist, shampoo person and the salon owner who cuts or styles your hair will all receive a portion of the tip. If three different people cut, color and shampoo your hair, give 70 percent of the total tip to the salon owner, and divide the remaining 30 percent equally between the colorist and shampoo person. If tipping with cash, place each of the tips into three separate envelopes.

Determine your budget. Your tip is a percentage of the total service provided. If your haircut and color costs $150, expect to tip the salon owner and the staff a total of between $22.50 and $30 for the salon service. Call the salon before your appointment to determine the cost of the hairstyle, cut or color to plan your tipping budget accordingly.

Place your gift in a small envelope if paying by cash. Once the service is completed, pay the receptionist or the hairstylist/owner. When using a credit card for payment, indicate the tip amount at the bottom of the receipt to thank the hairstylist for the service.

Tips & Warnings

  • During the holidays, give the hairstylist an extra 10 to 20 percent on top of your normal gratuity, or a small gift like scented candles or a gift certificate, as thanks for his continued service throughout the year.

  • Keep the tip dollar amount discreet and away from the eyes of other patrons or salon staff.
