1
Wash and condition your hair with products that are tailored to your hair type. Avoid specialty shampoos and conditioners, such as straight and sleek products, that may pull the curls out of your hair.
-
2
Blot, don't rub, the moisture out of your hair with a towel. Move throughout your entire head of hair, squeezing until your hair is damp.

3
Apply a plum-size amount of styling mousse to the palm of one hand and rub your hands together gently. Use both hands to work the mousse into your hair from the tips to the roots. As you work the mousse into the hair, scrunch the hair upward by gathering the tips of your hair in your palms and crumpling your hair upward.

Scrunch, or crumple, your entire head of hair until you feel the hair is thoroughly scrunched. Those with longer hair may need to add additional mousse as they scrunch to ensure that each strand is coated.

5
Dry your hair with a diffuser set to low heat. The diffuser will reduce flyaways and frizz in your hair as it dries. To retain the scrunch style, work the long fingers of the diffuser into the hair. Your tips will gather at the bottom of the diffuser and turn on. Keep the diffuser in place as you dry, moving it only to push hair inward to obtain the beach bum style. Move throughout your entire hair until it is completely dry.

6
Spray the hair lightly with a light-hold hairspray or texturizing spray. These two products will retain the beach waves throughout the entire day. In addition, hairspray will help combat flyaways.

Tips & Warnings
Shorter hair will use less mousse and longer hair may use more mousse. Always apply less rather than more to keep from using too much product, which may flatten hair.
Do not comb through your hair between scrunching or drying; this will flatten the hair.
Always use a diffuser when drying scrunched hair. Do not place a standard hair dryer directly onto your scrunched hair.
