Instructions

    • 1

Contact your state police department. In most cases, a homemade vehicle will need to be inspected by a state police official, who will certify it as road-worthy and issue it a vehicle identification number, or VIN.

    • 2

Fill out the appropriate paperwork. Each state has a form to be filled out with information about the vehicle.

    • 3

Save all paperwork related to your vehicle. Some states may require the vehicle's original VIN, salvage titles, junking receipts and bills of sale for all parts purchases. Essentially, inspectors want to be able to ensure that all the parts of the vehicle are legally yours.

    • 4

Pay fees. In addition to inspection fees during Step 1, there are title, licensing and processing fees required with the submission of all paperwork.
