Multitier skirts are good to wear when dancing.

Multitier wrap skirts appeal to those who are looking for a peasant, bohemian or Gypsy look. These skirts need to drape to enhance the body and can be worn by all figure types. A multitier skirt is a way of using up pieces of material you have or of recycling fabric from dresses you no longer wear. Making a multitier skirt is an opportunity to be creative and come up with a unique design.

Instructions

    • 1

Do your research. Check pattern books, catalogs, stores that sell multitier skirts and magazines. Establish a clear idea of exactly the sort of style you want.

    • 2

Make a fashion statement. The multitier skirt looks best if you use different patterns and bright colors. A skirt that is solid black, brown or gray is dull.

    • 3

Calculate how many tiers you want. It can be as few as three or as many as eight, depending on the style you want.

    • 4

Design a pattern. Measure your height from waist to toes and decide on the length and width of each tier, taking into account that it needs to be wider at the bottom than the top.

    • 5

Mark where you will cut the tiers on the pattern and allow 1/2-inch for seam and hem allowances. Take your waist measurement and add an extra 5 inches to 7 inches for the gathered look. Remember the first tier needs to be full-length; the second can be mid-calf and the third can be knee length, for example.

    • 6

Select the fabric. You want your multitier skirt to drape, so look for material such as satin, viscose, silk or rayon. Use the heaviest material for the first tier and lighter fabrics for subsequent layers. You could, for instance, start with cotton for the first layer, rayon for the second and end up with chiffon for the third and fourth layers.

    • 7

Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut the first tier. When you finish, cut off the paper to the second tier, pin it to the fabric and repeat.

    • 8

Make a waistband. Cut a solid colored piece of fabric that is at least 2-inches wide and the width of the skirt plus 5 to 10 inches to allow tying a bow. Sew it on the machine – except for one end – and then turn it inside out.

    • 9

Layer the tiers one on top of the other. Pin the layers together and carefully sew. Hand-stitch each hem – except for chiffon which doesn’t ravel -- for a more finished look.

    • 10

Pin the tiers to the waistband so that it gathers. Hand-stitch into place to avoid having the tiers bunch up. Reinforce on the sewing machine.
