Cone weaving on a motorcycle teaches efficient handling.

Learning to cone weave on a motorbike teaches you excellent control over the bike at low speeds. This can give you the confidence and ability to move safely amid traffic and other obstacles, making you a more proficient rider. As with most practical skills, the key to mastery is practice. Start with the cones spread far apart, then gradually narrow the distance between them as your skill increases.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up six traffic cones in a line at 15-foot intervals. Position the motorcycle ahead of them and prepare to execute the course.

    • 2

Engage the clutch and slip the bike into first gear. Apply the rear brake. Release the clutch slightly and apply the throttle gently. Reduce the pressure on the brake until the bike begins to crawl forward. Maintain a low speed as you drive toward the cones, about 3 to 5 mph.

    • 3

Focus on the final cone in the line. Do not look down or at the cone around which you are weaving; let your peripheral vision do the work.

    • 4

Drive straight toward each cone. Turn the handlebars slightly to one side and then the other way as you pass each cone. Maintain constant, light pressure on the clutch, brake and throttle. Turn the handlebars back and forth to weave around the cones.

Tips & Warnings

  • Widen the gap between the cones if the exercise proves too difficult. Narrow it once you become proficient.
