How to Add a Header in Dreamweaver CS5

One of the quickest ways to break up or “chunk” information on a Web page is to add page headers. In Dreamweaver CS5, you can use headers in two ways – image headers, such as the colored bars that stretch across the top of a page, and text headers, like those printed on documents and white papers. Adding headers in Dreamweaver is just a matter of deciding on the kind of header, where it should go and what it should say, if it’s a textual header. Then you must make sure your Web page adjusts properly to the header placement.

Instructions

  1. Image Header

    • 1

Launch Dreamweaver CS5. Click the “Open…” link, browse to the Web page that you wish to edit and double-click to open the page.

    • 2

Click the cursor in the page at the location where the header will be inserted, such as the top-leftmost area under the “Code” button.

    • 3

Click the “Insert” menu. Click “Image.” Browse to the image header you wish to use, such as a 440-pixel by 100-pixel horizontal bar, and double-click the file name to insert the header into the page. This will shift everything down on the page, so you should scroll through and make sure the page flow and integrity are maintained as desired.

    Text Header

    • 4

Start Dreamweaver CS5. Click the “Open…” link, browse to the Web page that you wish to edit and double-click to open the page.

    • 5

Click the cursor on the page at the location where you want to insert the header, such as the top-leftmost section under the “Code” button.

    • 6

Type the header text, which will appear as regular default paragraph text for the moment. Press the “Enter” key to force a line break after the header text.

    • 7

Highlight the text and then open the “Property Inspector” at the bottom of the work area. Click the “Format” menu and select “Heading 1” or your preferred header format. Dreamweaver defaults range from “Heading 1,” the largest, boldest font, to “Heading 6,” which is the smallest.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add headers to a new Dreamweaver page in the same manner described here. At the Dreamweaver splash screen, click the “HTML” link under “Create New” instead of the “Open…” link. In most cases, you’ll add the header directly at the top of the new, blank page. If you want to add the header lower on the page, press the “Enter” key repeatedly to move down to the desired insertion point.
