How to Cut a Chrome Steel Chain
If the key for your padlock is lost, it may be necessary to cut the chain off a bicycle or outhouse door. Chrome steel chains are ideal for use outdoors as the chrome plating prevents the steel from corrosion that can cause the chain to weaken. Place the jaws of the bolt cutter on one of the links in the chain. If you are cutting a length of chain, measure how much is required. If you are removing a chain, cut at the point closest to the object to achieve the maximum leverage.

Close the jaws of the bolt cutter on the link and apply as much pressure as possible. The closer the chain is to your waist, the more pressure can be applied.

Repeat the previous steps on the other side of the chain link if you are cutting a thick chain. Keep working on both sides of the chain until the link is severed.

Cut through the link using a sturdy hacksaw.

Tips & Warnings
Using a hacksaw to cut a chrome steel chain may take time and effort, but your persistence will eventually break through the link.
If you are cutting a length of chain that is not attached to a structure, put it in a vice for extra leverage.
Focus on the task at hand when using a hacksaw to cut an attached chain as one slip could cause a serious injury.
