How to Change the Stove Top on a GE Spectra

GE Spectra ranges are freestanding electric ranges, designed for home kitchens. The ranges have smooth-top stoves, which provide a more attractive appearance than a stove with metal coil burners, as well as a flat surface on which to place hot items. The smooth-top stove consists of a glass panel, that, although sturdy, will break if an item is dropped on it. If the glass breaks, you must stop using the range immediately and only resume use after the stove top is replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the range's breaker in your home's main service panel.

    • 2

Open the oven door and remove the screws under the front of the main top, securing the top to the range.

    • 3

Lift the main top, then secure it in an elevated position using a large object. If possible, have a partner hold the top up.

    • 4

Remove the screws and brackets from each burner to remove the burners from the underside of the range.

    • 5

Unclip the burner wires from the wire clips, if applicable to your range.

    • 6

Lift the main top up and off the range.

    • 7

Compare the placement of the brackets on the underside of the old main top to the brackets on the underside of the new main top. In some instances, you may need to transfer the brackets from one top to the other. The brackets are secured with screws.

    • 8

Place the new main top onto the range and elevate it once again.

    • 9

Install the burners on the underside of the new top and secure them in position, using the brackets and screws that were removed.

    • 10

Clip the wires into the wire clips, if applicable.

    • 11

Lower the main top, then secure it using the screws that were removed from the old top.

    • 12

Restore the range's power supply to complete the replacement.
