How to Make My Leather Jacket Look More Rock & Roll

A plain leather jacket is still pretty rock & roll.

A standard leather jacket already looks pretty "rock & roll." Far and away the perfect rock & roll accessory, a leather jacket can stand out more effectively if you modify it. However, over-accessorizing could cause your jacket to become confused with punk rock leather jackets. By avoiding band patches and painted stencils while still applying some studs and zippers, you can make your jacket more rock & roll than punk rock. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Line the collar of your jacket with studs or spikes. Use a leather punch to create a hole where you want the spikes to go -- studs will need two holes. Do not try to push the them directly into the leather. Stick the spikes or studs through their respective holes and screw or push them into their backings to secure them -- studs will require that you bend their prongs into the stud cavities. Also consider applying them to pocket flaps, lapels and cuffs.

Sew zippers -- it doesn't matter if they open into anything or not -- onto your jacket using a thick leather gauge needle and sinew. Zippers can be stitched over pockets or above wrists.

    • 3

Measure and cut pieces of fabric -- leopard print or dark-colored flannel work very well for this purpose -- to be sewn over lapels or jacket pockets. Augmenting the outside of your jacket with some color will make it look more rock & roll.

Purchase leather fringe and trim it to the length of your arms. Sew it onto the outer seam of the arms, being careful to sew it onto back edge of the seam so that it appears to stick into the seam. Do not stitch fringe onto your jacket if you have already excessively studded or spiked it; though it goes nicely with leopard print lapels.
