How to Request a Job Promotion in Writing
Being a employee can give you a solid advantage when opportunities for advancement with that company come along. Many companies have policies that give preference to existing employees, and that can make working your way up the career ladder a lot easier. Of course you still need the requisite skills and training, and you also need to pose your promotion request properly.

1
Obtain the name of the hiring manager, along with that person's exact job title. Address your letter directly to that individual.

2
Discuss your desire for the promotion with your boss if you feel it is appropriate, especially if you feel that the input of that individual would boost your chances of getting the job.

3
Begin your request; specify the position for which you want to be considered. List the exact job title of the job you are seeking, along with the department where that opening exists.
-
4
Provide a list of the relevant experience that qualifies you for the position you are seeking. List your accomplishments in the position you hold, and explain how those accomplishments have prepared you for the promotion you seek.
-
5
Update your resume to reflect all of your career experience, as well as any additional schooling or training as it relates to the promotion you want. For instance, if you are seeking a promotion to a project manager position, any training from the Project Management Institute or seminars on project management would be relevant, and potentially very helpful.
