How to Troubleshoot Lync

Microsoft Lync is the company's newest program in instant messaging client services, replacing Windows Messenger. The software is available for Windows users, but Mac OS X users may use the companion software, Microsoft Communicator. Lync allows users over a private network or server to communicate within different Microsoft programs, such as Word or Outlook, because of its ability to integrate. However, you may discover problems at some point during use. If ever you have a problem with Microsoft Lync, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to solve these issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to Microsoft Lync's homepage for updating. If you are experiencing any problems with your communications or connectivity to users, you may not have the most current release of this software. Download and update your version of Microsoft Lync to the most recent version.

Completely reinstall your Microsoft Lync software. If you are sure that your version of Lync is up-to-date and you still have problems, completely reinstall this software before troubleshooting any other issues. Open your “Control Panel” on your Windows desktop and navigate to the “Programs and Features” folder. Wait for the list to load, then select and uninstall Microsoft Lync from your computer. Delete any remaining files, such as an executable (.exe) file that may exist from a previous download. Navigate to the Microsoft Lync homepage and reinstall the latest version of this software.

    • 3

Check your Internet connection. Open your “Network and Sharing Center” and make sure you are connected to the appropriate network. Additionally, select “Internet Options” from this network center and make sure your settings, such as any VPN connections, are specific to Microsoft Lync's target network. Additionally, there is an option to troubleshoot your Internet connection in the “Network and Sharing Center.” Run this feature to ensure no problems exist with your connection.

    • 4

Open the “Windows Firewall” on the target computer and make sure the profile is allowed to connect to the system's network. If you are having issues connecting to users in your Microsoft Lync software, your computer may not be authorized on the network. Select the appropriate profile, whether domain, public or private, to adjust the settings for this network. Click on “Outbound Rules” from the left-hand side menu and scroll through the list of network allowances. If you need authorization to change any of these allowances, contact your network administrator. Otherwise, update any allowances and save these changes.

    • 5

Close any unnecessary programs while you are running Microsoft Lync and any connected programs. If you are experiencing slow messaging and program updates, your processor may be too busy. Programs such as media players and Internet browsers require a lot of virtual memory and may not be useful to your important tasks. Close these programs to increase computer response time with Lync and its integrated components.
