How to Make Websites Smaller for a Twitter Bit

Twitter's 140 character limit can make it difficult to express everything you want in a single tweet, especially if you include a link. Each character in a link's URL counts against the character limit. Therefore, it is helpful to keep the URL as short as possible so you can have more characters available for your comment. You can shorten URLs by using a link shortening service, such as Bitly or TinyURL.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and navigate to a link shortening service such as Bit.ly or TinyURL.com.

    • 2

Enter the Web address you want to shorten into the text box near the top of the page. Either type the address or copy and paste it from another location. Press "Enter" to submit the URL and create a shortened URL.

    • 3

Highlight the shortened URL that is displayed on the page and press "Ctrl" and "C" simultaneously to copy the link.

    • 4

Log in to Twitter and compose a new tweet. Paste the shortened link into the tweet by pressing "Ctrl" and "V" simultaneously. Send the tweet with the shortened link included. When clicked, the user is taken to the original, longer link.
