The angle of your roof overhang is a necessary measurement to have for completing your roof installation and installing additional features to the exterior of your home. For instance, if you are going to install rain gutters, you will need to know the angle of your roof. While assembling your roof, you can calculate the overhang angle by holding the overhang piece in place and taking a measurement. With the measurement, you can use a calculator to find the angle before completing assembly.
Hold the overhang piece of the roof in place, then measure the distance from the wall to the bottom portion of the overhang. Place the end of the measuring tape at the wall and measure outward in a straight line. Record this number.
Place the measuring tape on the point where the overhang piece meets the wall, then measure down to the first place on the wall where you began your measurement. Record this number.
Use your calculator to find the tangent of the angle by dividing the first measurement by the second measurement.
Calculate the cosine function to find the angle of the overhang. Press the "ArcTan" button on the calculator, then enter the tangent figure found by dividing the first measurement by the second measurement. Press "Enter" to attain the angle in degrees.
