How to Greet Readers on My Blog

How to Greet Readers on My Blog thumbnail
Reader trust is an essential part of a blog's success.

When someone visits your blog for the first time after discovering it through a search engine or link from another website, some of the first things that she is likely to want to know include who you are, why you are an authority on your blog's topic and what other information she can expect to find on your blog. The standard way to present this information on a blog is with an "About Me" page. Add an "About Me" page to your blog to greet your readers and present basic information about your blog.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the "New Page" or "Add Page" function on your blog to create a new static page. Avoid using the "New Post" function, as posts have dates and eventually drop off of the blog's home page. Pages are static; most blogs place a permanent link to each page on the navigation bar.

    • 2

Type a brief introduction welcoming readers to your blog. Explain who you are and what your blog is about. Tell readers about the qualifications you possess that make your content worth reading. These are the essential elements of an "About Me" page; the following suggestions are optional and may not apply to all blogs.

    • 3

Tell your readers how your blog earns income. If you have affiliate partnerships, explain that when readers purchase products through your affiliate links, the commissions that you earn help to fund the continued development of the blog.

    • 4

Explain your review methodology if you publish product reviews on your blog. If your blog also earns money through affiliate partnerships, it can increase reader trust if you explain what you do to ensure that your reviews are impartial.

    • 5

Ask your readers to participate by leaving comments. As your blog begins to attract a consistent reader base, encouraging comments fosters active participation from readers and adds text content to your blog, which can improve search engine placement.

    • 6

Tell readers how they can contact you. Being available to your readers helps you gain their trust. If you have any advertising partnerships, advertisers may also require you to post a contact email address somewhere on your blog.

    • 7

Include a photo of yourself. This allows readers to associate a face with your name, giving your blog a personal touch and letting your readers know that there is an actual person behind the content they read.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some development engines such as WordPress and Blogger allow you to place custom text in the sidebar of your blog. Although a text widget is much smaller than a full-length "About Me" page and cannot contain the same amount of content, a text widget can be a good way to greet readers who do not want to click the "About" link and view the full page because the sidebar is generally displayed on every page of the blog. Use a text widget to display the most important items from your "About Me" page.
